Adventures with Needle and Thread: Embroidery on Paper

Adventures With Needle And Thread: Embroidery On Paper is a workshop that will teach you the basics of embroidery on paper.

Virtually every hand embroidery pattern can be stitched onto paper using basic embroidery techniques. It is an easy to learn skill suited for beginners and seasoned embroiderers alike.

Almost any kind of paper can be embroidered including tissue paper, parchment, card board, matt board and photographs - in recent years embroidered photography has been enjoying increasing popularity.

In this workshop you will learn the basics of embroidery on paper. Elisa will show you some solutions to the challenges that you will be faced with when embroidering on paper. How to stitch through thick card? How to ensure that the holes look nice and even? How to prevent finer paper from tearing? How to fill designs with solid areas of embroidery without causing closely placed holes to 'merge' and ruin your design?

Elisa will also introduce you to the art of appliqué with paper and on paper.

Please bring with you:

It can be any plain or coloured paper, card stock, simple printer paper, matt or glossy, smooth or textured, magazine or book pages, photographs on photographic paper, matt board - whatever takes your fancy.

Again, any thread you like is fine - fine or not, stranded cotton, pearl cotton, wool, silk etc. You can also bring beads and sequins if you'd like to use those in your work.

Be aware that whatever you chose you shouldn't mind poking holes in it.

This could simply be a big sharp needle, a thumb tack or a hat pin.
